How To Choose a Video Format When Converting A Video

AVI (Audio Video Interleaved) is released by Microsoft. In the field of video, AVI can be said one of the oldest formats. AVI format can provide good image quality, and it allows us to choose the compression standard as we like, and it is widely used formats and it is also one of the video format used for a very long time. However, it also has some drawbacks like it doesn’t provide a regular way to encode aspect ration information; it cannot include some variable bit-rate data, such as MP3 with the sample rate lower that 32 kHz, etc. So this format is getting unpopular now.



FLV (Flash Video) is a new streaming video format. Because of its small file size and fast loading speed, watching videos through network becomes possible. The appearance of FLV can effectively solve the problem that the exported SWF file size is too large after importing the video files into Flash and can’t be used or viewed very well through the network. So we can say that FLV is specially made for network use.



MKV, also called Matroska is a new multimedia encapsulation format. This encapsulation format can put a variety of videos with different codec and 16 or more different audio tracks and subtitles into a Matroska Media file. It is also one of an open source. Matroska also can provide very good interactive features, and is more convenient and powerful than MPEG. Besides, it can provide videos with high quality.



WebM is an open and free media file format. WebM video format is a new container format, which is developed based on the Matroska (MKV) container format. It includes the VP8 video and Ogg Vorbis audio tracks.  WebM standard network video is more inclined to be an open source and also it is based on the HTML5 standard. WebM project aims to open to everyone for developing video format of high quality and open-sourse. Besides, its main point is to solve the video service problem and this is the core of network user experience. According to Google, WebM format quite efficient and it can be smoothly used on netbook, tablet, and other handheld devices. So it is supported by the biggest video sharing site YouTube for playing videos online. (Tip: if you want to upload DVD to YouTube, you can convert DVD to WebM first.) Also Google, Firefox and Opera also support this format.


WMV is a kind of technical standard that is independent of the encoded mode and can stream the multimedia in real time on the Internet. Microsoft Corporation wishes to use it to replace the technical standards like QuickTime and WAV, AVI file extensions, etc. The main advantages of WMV are: eextensible and elastic media types, local or network playback, stream prioritization, multiple language support, augmentability, and so on. ASF, one of the Encapsulation Format of WMV contains digital rights management facilities and the users don’t like that.
