Why Xiaomi Mi3 Online Sale on Flipkart Is A Trap : Buyers Review

Flipkart Xiaomi Mi3 sale OnlineMi3, the awesome phone launched in India couple of weeks ago. According to Flipkart the selling page of Mi3 on Flipkart website is getting a huge response. Flipkart received more than 100000 registrations for the first stock of this phone and finished the stock in just 40 minute in first sale day. This post is to tell you my view and experience and why i feel that Xiaomi Mi3 online sale on Flipkart is a trap.

I visited Flipkart website after hearing this huge response of buyers and got registered for the next sale which was on 29 July, 2014.

On 28 July 2014 I visited the Mi store page of the website and got some suggestion and big selling schedule of the website. First I will show you the email I got before one day of the start of the sale.

Hello,Greetings! The Mi 3 sale that you have registered for begins at 2 pm on July 29, 2014.How to buy your Mi 3?

  •  Make sure that you are logged in at least 2-3 hours before the sale begins.
  •  You will be able to reserve your phone starting 2pm, July 29th. You will not need to pay at this stage.
  •  Your Mi 3 will be automatically added to your cart by 6 PM.
  •  Please check your email after 6 PM on July 29 for detailed payment instruction.
  •  Do ensure that you have completed your order before 11:59 PM on July 30 (Wednesday).
Please Note: Each customer can reserve only one phone. Even after you have reserved your phone, you may not be able to complete your order if your pincode is not serviceable. We apologise for the inconvenience. We have limited stocks. First come, first serve. Fingers Crossed!Warm Regards,
Flipkart Team

First of all after reading this mail I got confused about “logged in at least 2-3 hours before”.

I am still not able to understand what a foolish suggestion it is. Is there any difference between a user who logged in before 3 hours and who loggin in before 10 minutes? Because if the site receive huge traffic at any point even your session may get expire. So it seems to be very clear there is something behind the seen.

But still I decided to login with my laptop as well as with Flipkart app on my mobile befor 3 hours. I logged in via mobile app as well as on Flipkart website; after all I want to have a phone in my cart. Another thing which was not clear to me is the full selling schedule made by Flipkart. That is first reserve a phone, then phone will be added in cart by 6 P.M., then pay till the next day.

It is very common for a buyer to make multiple accounts to buy. Buyer may use one account for app and another for website login. So there is a possibility that by using this plan he may add 1 phone in each of the account using different account on different device and make payment for any of one. So I believe it’s a 100% fail strategy which cannot be expected from a site like Flipkart.

On the sale day I got a reminder from Flipkart (see the image below)

Flipkart Xiaomi Mi3

Now In this reminder the are saying that immediately complete your order after clicking the add button. Now it is clear that the entire story regarding the selling schedule they send me in the yesterday mail, was a shit.

Clock was running on Flipkart website. Only 5 minute was left, I opened one more tab in my browser for Flipkart search, I searched for Mi3 in search bar and you know what I got the message “Out of Stock” message over the cell phone image even before start of the sale. I thought it must be a mistake, still there in one minute for the sale to get started.

Finally I got the “Buy Now” button on my screen. I clicked on the button and got the message “You are not logged in” I refreshed the page and got the message “Opps something is wrong, try again”, I clicked on “try again” and got the golden words:

“Out of stock! Today’s Mi 3 sale is now over. You may register for the next sale (Aug 5) beginning 6 PM today”

All of the above as I told you happen just in 10 seconds only. I immediately (with in 15 second) checked my mobile. But there was no update in the app. So I just left my phone because the app was not aware of what is going on. :)

This was not only my story, my friends was trying to book the phone at sharp 2PM after getting the “Buy Now” button. But they got the same sequence of messages as I got.

Questions were hitting my mind? How can it be possible?

  • Phone is out of stock after 10 second only?
  • “Buy Now” button was not able to add mobile into the cart?
  • On click event was throwing a message that “Not Logged In”?
  • After getting the message “Out of Stock”, I was logged in?
  • Do they really have sufficient Mi3 phone for this sale?
  • Is there something wrong and not transparent in the sale?
  • Was all this program was pre planned?
  • Does advising buyer to logon before 3 Hours, not a method of making huge website hits?
  • Login before 3 hours was really helpful?
  • Is this a marketing strategy of Flipkart and Xiaomi?

I have shared you whatever I faced while booking this phone. But after searching a bit more on their website I come to know something interesting about Flipkart scheme. May be some of you will be aware of it, (Given below)

One possibility that says, Phone was “Out of Stock” before the sale starts:

Have you heard about flipkartfirst scheme? You can become a privileged member of flipkart by paying them 500Rs/year. You will get early access to the launches on flipkart.

As mentioned on their website:

“What are the benefits of “Early Access”?

As a Flipkart First subscriber, you get priority access to some of our exclusive product launches and key shopping events. Priority access to products and shopping events is solely on a first-come, first-serve basis in cases where stocks are limited.”

Is it not a cheap marketing strategy of making money? It is a clear way to differentiate customers at the time of early launch.

Now the question is suppose in case they have 500 phones only and the sale time was 2PM, and they started sale before time for their paid members, then the crowd of customers waiting for sale at 2 PM was only to make website hits and to make data like phone was out of stock in just one minute.

I would like to ask you to please share your experience. Is the marketing strategy they are using is dangerous for trust of customers they have.

Or

Future online launch should announced with other site like Amazon or SnapDeal since they Don’t have such money making plans for memberships and all customers for them are equal.

Waiting for your response in comments.

They are creating the publicity, they dont ready to sell the phone also…
Im already registered before 4 days, but at today 2 PM its showing sold out…
    i dont like this…
    very bad..

    • I was shocked with this 500/- per year member policy. In future companies will launch phones using website to reduce cost. This is just a start. By paying them you will get privileged member and get access some time before but suppose if 30,000 people registered as privileged member then again competition start between them also. In this war these website get benefited only. Really cheap…

      • I already have Flipkart First Subscription and was logged in from 6AM in the morning.Even then, when the count down timer hit zero,It showed out of stock.

  2. Hi…..your comments are true….it is a marketing gimmick to show there is huge demand Mi3 Phones..and keep extending the dates..there is also a possibilty that company want to clear Mi3 Phone Stocks with them before they can launch Mi4.:)

  3. Same happened with me as well, i liked flipkart earlier but now i hate them and mi3 is the last product i am going to buy from them (as it is not available elsewhere. I registered for 22july sale and did not get chance to buy as i logged on at 1pm, nd on 29 july i was denied a phone at 2:00pm. That is pathetic.

    • lol……i agree its a market gimmick
but the player is not flipkart alone….. 😀
its includes xiaomi and other online services too…
dont worry guyzz……..u can find lots of stock in ebay with 2k-5k of announced price.
and they got hell lot of stock.
Do u guys really think, xiaomi is not gonna get any of that extra amount from ebay………if they are not getting, obviously any1 can screw for selling the phone for more price than officially announced amount.

      Wake up guyz…see around too………

Iam just interested in the phone because its less price on announced date, if i have to pay 19 or 20k for this phone in other websites, i would go for Xperia SP or Blackberry Z10, or even Karbonn (i dont remember the model number).

Just think, if its just 1 phone per register and phone is off in 2-3 minutes, how the hell the sellers of ebay or other websites have packs of them, and not just one seller :O

      • I was able to order the phone in the first sale even when i was not a flipkart first or xiaomi exclusive.
moeover acc to info they have got 10000 phone stocked up in each sale

  4. Indians are being served left over from China ( MI4 launched in China on same day 22nd July with much higher specs and at same price of MI3, who will buy MI3 in China? ) and like beggers we are jumping on this whatever few pieces thrown at us. Chinese companies don’t find India market attractive as the domestic (china) demand is much more than Indian.

Better be loyal to companies treated us and supported us well like Samsung, Nokia.

  5. Hi, The same happened with me also. I was logged in with my account but Flipkart said not logged in , and when i logged in i got error of “Something went wrong!” and after retry “Out of Stock”.
I never thought Flipkart will do such scams, shame on you Flipkart!!! :(

  6. May you are true. I had register flipkartfirst service. I had face same error message but I try multiple time and refresh page and get success to added phone in my cart. One of my friend who had not registered flipkartfirst service even they get success to purchase the phone. Also cart is updated in next 10 min and I pay and confirm my order. Don;t know strategy for 6pm and email thay said bla bla… Using this method they want to generate more crowd and curiosity nothing else :

I personally dont think xiaomi is gonna develop their market in india……….its just a trick to sell off their MI3 stock, if ‘X’ wanna develop any business of his, ‘X’ will never come up with bits and pieces every week, He will just come with a bundle may be if he has to take a month………….And the important thing, who can guarantee me the later stock is as good as former 5k pieces, after making profits, ‘X’ might just leave the country, and safe in his homeland………Any ever visited the 30 mentioned service centres??

    Well….just my thoughts :)

  8. Its a shame on flipkart to try such tricks on their loyal customer. By doing this again and again the customers will get irritated and will loose them to other competitors. Agrees that Mi3 is a good specification for this price. But if Xiaomi and Flipkart are continuing this, then they will loose edge over others.

  9. Firstly, how is it possible that within a a click of a button it can get Out of stock. Well its not sounding practical to me.
secondly, since then i’m searching for one single person from that around 10000 or so lucky buyers who managed to purchase it on 29th but as of my surprise i didn’t find a single comment or anything where any one has claimed to have made a successful booking on 29th.
Whatever it is, even if any one managed to book it on 29th, this kind of marketing strategy is not only going to put a negative impression over @Flipkart but @XiaomiIndia itself is also gonna loose some serious potential buyers.
On 5th of August its gonna be my last try if same story repeated i’m gonna drop the decision of buying Xiaomi & i’ll better go for Moto G.

  10. cheap website…
post was very good and lots of facing same problem. flipkart just create humor

  11. Reading the articles and comments so far, i think i had the worst experience to share
Guess what, i was able to successfully order the phone on 29th July. Wait, more is coming.
I didn’t order the express delivery within one day. So i was given 1st July as the standard delivery date, however order was just “confirmed and not ye packed” till morning of 1st August. So I called FK and lodged a complaint. I was told that FK is very sorry for inconvenience and now i’ll get my order delivered on 4th August. Later in the day I received 2sms saying my order is packed and another saying it is shipped. On 2nd of August, i received a sms saying my order is cancelled and returned. How on earth did they cancel my order without my consent is still a mystery to me. So I called again to hear how much sorry FK is now for my inconvenience. I was told that order is cancelled because logistics couldn’t deliver it and i should try another order(whaat??are you kidding me?? )
I lodged a protest saying I wanted to talk with executives and I am not going to place another order. I want the same order delivered. Helpdesk told me that his seniors are busy and they would call me in an hour. I still haven’t received a call. I wrote an acrimonious review on FK about their service and cheap publicity stunt of xiaomi, which they haven’t published. I feel there are many more other negative reviews which they have chosen not to publish. Anyways, enough of this insulting treatment given by FK. Switching to Amazon for good.

  12. actually what is hapening is like u open two broswer and oen that count down in both then u refersh one tab after some time and after that u will notice that the refreshed tab will have less second left in comarison to the unrefreshed… so when u bu try to refersh just 30 second before it start u will get the mobile m sure i did like this to buy 2 mobiles for me and my friend

  13. its really waste of time… flipkart.com is loosing thr clients. even i am doing it second time, i logged in at 1pm . but its showing out of stock at 2:00:04pm its is really ridiculous.. i Just wana say to Flipkart.com if able to sell then only u promote the products otherwise dont need to waste others valuable time ..
    Flipkart = Time Waste

    • Total wastage of time, how can a mobile go out of stock in 2 secs. This is not acceptable, Y did they register 100000+ users , if they had crap 10 sets for sale…

  14. I fully agree with you,as the clock stop ticking 05,04,03,02,01…i clicked on buy now and immediately message came “OUT OF STOCK”…I really very disappointed with Flip-cart management because the end user who wants to use the phone..will not get and now people are selling the same on e-bay for Rs-19000 to Rs.24000,so this “first-come-first basis” is a nothing but just to make Xiaomi mi3 popular… anyways I tried in July as well as on 5th Aug and the same thing happened now I decided never to buy anything from Flipcart because these people only thinks about filling there pocket nit about layman

  15. Sorry folks. But any website with x no of stock and 25x no of visitors to purchase will face the same exact scenario.
There is a reason for login before 2-3 hours. I could make out why they came up with this.but it a fix to diversify the authentication load on flipkart DB. session timeouts were increased on server level.
But still an AJAX BUY OUT BUTTON can’t guarantee a checkout. It all depends on which session the server started processing.
If its just a 16 core * 16 boxes.( this is too high) with multi processing enabled . still some session threads will be left waiting . and those ppl( unlucky) will be pissed out. I see many here.
So guys relax… And flipkart guys u need to outsource your processing to servers. Authentication remains with u and handle it better… No 2-3 hrs logic.

  17. Same thing happened today with me. I was logged in from abt one hour prior to start of sale. And i was already registered. As soon as i click the buy now button it says . u r not registered for this sale. I refreshed n the fone was out of stock. Only this time this al happened in just 2 sec Max. So wat d hell is goin on here. This is bu****t man. :<

  18. I agree and am very very disappointed. Both at FlipKart and Xiaomi. I hate this teasing game, and now I am ready to spend less or more, but I will not spend on a arrogant n stupid brand like Xiaomi.

    • Hi friend, sorry to hear about that.. I wrote this post and shared my full experience of 29 July sale of xiaomi on fk… In the next sale on 5 augest I successfully got this phone.

The deal of selling this product exclusively on flipkart and selling it in batches may be a marketing trap to create shortage.

But in all this one thing I want to tell you by my personal experience is, This phone is awesome..

In my opinion wait for this phone if you can, I know its irritating but you will not get better than Mi3 even in 20000 Rs… When you will get this phone you will realize… :)

  19. I came across your blog as a genuine call of curiosity. I would like to share my experience here. But lets puts some facts straight here. I’m not sure why people mind spending a few minutes and research. (1) The concept of “Flash sale” – From Wiki “Deal-of-the-day (also called flash sales or one deal a day) is an eCommerce business model in which a website offers a single product for sale for a period of 24 to 36 hours. Potential customers register as members of the deal-a-day websites and receive online offers and invitations by email or social networks.”. It’s a Business Model. And there is nothing wrong with it. There is a reason why. To begin with, Xiaomi passes on commercial margins to end customer by having limited production capacity, limited marketing spending and yet assured of number of sales. Xiaomi adopts

I’m a Flipkart First Subscribers, yet I could not get in through my account on 4 Mbps line in Bangalore. But my friend on mobile, through his account could get 1! I Now if it’s worth the effort? I think so. at 13999 it’s a genuine deal!

  20. Its luck.

I tried 4 times before. Yesterday’s sale I got one.

They are not trying to fool us, its the volume of phones to the cart.

In our company now including me there are 8 owners of MI3.

And only one of them had “Flipkart First” service.

  21. Yes you are 100% right.
Flipkart and Xiomi are playing games with buyer.
The same case happened to me thirice.

  22. Yes my dear friends….similar experience…I tried thrice to buy xiomi m3 but in vain. I tried various methods but still in vain. Either flipkart or xiomi are taking us for a ride. Fliptkart, from where I bought two mobiles, Panasonic P51 and Asus Zenfone 5, should not be doing this to their loyal customers. Their methods are unclear, seems that they do no want us to understand what is going on. Now I have switched to Snapdeal and have ordered ZTE V5 for Rs.10999. Yet to receive it.

  23. I think the first set of phones will be really good where the firm will loose money in small quantity and then it releases lakhs of mobiles with less quality so that by that time watching the good reviews we will order the remaining bad quality goods.
